Hannah and Dave the New Youth Sport Ambassadors
The College's New Youth Sport Ambassadors
15th December 2011
Hi, we are Dave Thomas and Hannah Burgess: Hereford Sixth Form College’s new Youth Sport Ambassadors. Dave's main sporting passion is hockey and he has represented Herefordshire County in hockey for the past four years and also helps coach various sports. Hannah was the ‘2010 Young Volunteer of the Year’ and plays and coaches county cricket as well as other sports.
Recently we both attended a 'Young Ambassadors’ Conference' at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry where we met middle-distance runner Tim Prendergast who has represented New Zealand in the past three Paralympics. His story was one of true bravery and courage and showed how sport can help you overcome other hardships you may face in life: he was a true inspiration to us both. We were also made aware of the seven Olympic and Paralympic Values which we will be promoting throughout the College and surrounding areas —including articles in The Student Voice. The Olympic values are Friendship, Respect and Excellence and the Paralympian values are Determination, Inspiration, Courage and Equality. We believe that these values are not only essential in sport, but also in our everyday lives.
Another part of our jobs as Sports Ambassadors will be to run a variety of competitions in the lead up to the Olympic Games. These competitions will not only be aimed at the sporty amongst us, we aim to bring everyone together as that is also what the Olympics are about. These competitions aim to include all the subjects on offer at College, our first competition is based around Art, Textiles and Photography: we will announce the details in the new year.
We will also be playing a key part in organising the School Youth Games which this year will not only involve over 1000primary school children in inter- and intra-school competitions, but also students in secondary and further education. One of our main aims will be to promote individual and doubles sports that aren't always prominent in schools and colleges.
