Leadership Academy to Organise Olympic Festival
13th December 2010
A key part of the Sports Co-ordinator's role last year was to establish the Hereford Sixth Form College Leadership Academy. This Year has seen the Academy expand, involving a further 20 students. The Academy supports students already involved in volunteering and helps others find new placements in their chosen sport, school or club. As well as placements these students are also given the opportunity to volunteer and lead at one-off events throughout the year and they have the chance to achieve qualifications in coaching, officiating and other related courses.
This year’s Leadership Academy students are hoping to organise the HSFC Olympic and Paralympic Festival in March. The Festival will follow the key values outlined by the Olympics and will encourage all College students to participate in one of the seven sports on offer. This will tie into the College's new Get Set status. If you have any suggestions for sports you would like to see offered at this festival then please let Hannah Milde (hcm@hereford.ac.uk) know.
The Leadership Academy will also replicate the work achieved by last year’s leaders by helping to organise the Hereford Youth Games. Students will be entirely responsible for the running, organisation and delivery of the Games which attract over 1000 primary school pupils. Not only will they be co-ordinating the event, they will also be mentoring other leaders on the day.
Students involved in the HSFC Leadership Academy are encouraged to sign up to the Youth Sport Trust’s Step into Sport initiative which awards young people for their volunteering in sport. Last year saw two College students achieve their Bronze Awards (50+ hours of volunteering), so congratulations to Rebecca Armstrong and Charli Lloyd. This term we have already had three students achieve this award, Flo Quick, Georgia Braid and Rachel Dixon. Hannah Burgess has achieved her Bronze, Silver (100+) and Gold Award (200+hours) for her volunteering at Ledbury Rugby Club - Congratulations!
Hannah has also been rewarded for her hard work by being elected as the College’s first SRC Sports Officer. Hannah, along with Katie Parkes who is the new Assistant Sports Officer, will represent the activities of the many sporting opportunities at College and encourage greater involvement in physical activity. They will help promote College sports clubs and teams, organise additional sporting activities and will be expected to be actively involved in the College sporting provision. The creation of these posts will have a hugely beneficial impact on sport within Hereford Sixth Form College.
