Sociology Students meet Neville Meredith, Community Cohesion & Race Equality Officer

Racism, Powerlessness and Inequality

11th October 2010

Sociology A Level students met Neville Meredith, Community Cohesion and Race Equality Officer in Herefordshire Council, who came to College to talk about racism, powerlessness and inequality. Neville, himself mixed-race, talked with passion about issues surrounding ethnicity and racism and students were able to talk about their own experiences. “This week the Equality Act – that outlaws discrimination – comes into effect and it is more important than ever to discuss issues surrounding racism because we are living in an increasingly diverse society,” said Blythe Unwin, Head of Sociology. “Sociology is one subject where these sorts of issues are always discussed – it’s part of everything we study”.

Neville showed the students “Me We”, a film his team made showing the experiences of black and ethnic minority Herefordians. Many of the students recognised - and even went to school with – some of the people interviewed and their experiences were both moving and inspiring. As Neville said, “There are more people from black and ethnic minority (and especially Eastern European) backgrounds living in Hereford and we all need to work together to challenge racism.”
