HEREFORD SIXTH FORM COLLEGE LAUNCHES NEW MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME
5th September 2010
Students, parents and staff at Hereford Sixth Form College gathered to celebrate the launch of the College’s new music scholarship programme on Saturday, 4th September.
Music scholarships have been awarded to students following a rigorous selection process. In addition to studying A levels, the Music Scholars will receive personal tuition in their vocal or instrumental specialism and music theory lessons which can lead to the Trinity College Musicology Diploma. All the students will be prepared for application to Music Colleges or selective universities, including Choral or Instrumental Scholarships at Oxford or Cambridge.
Aryan Arji, Director of Music, said, "I am delighted at the success of the scheme. We have awarded 14 choral scholarships, 12 instrumental scholarships (2 violins, 1 viola, 1 cello, 2 flute, 1 clarinet, 2 trumpet, 1 percussion, 1 piano and 1 organ), and 7 academic scholarships. All were auditioned in very testing sessions, modelled on the methods used for Choral Scholarships to Oxbridge or auditions for music colleges. The general standard is very high and, in some cases, exceptional. Just as importantly, they show huge potential and enthusiasm for the very demanding programmes we have put in place for them, which hitherto would only have been available in a small number of independent schools."
In addition to concerts, the scholars’ choir will sing evensong in Hereford and Worcester cathedrals and a number of Cambridge colleges. The instrumental scholars have a variety of recitals and concerts planned, including chamber music and also visits to perform in schools to promote music to younger pupils.
Jonathan Godfrey, Principal, in congratulating Mr.Arji said, "A very strong team of professional teachers and performers has been assembled to support the students and Aryan, our Director of Music and all staff are very much looking forward to working with them to achieve great things for music in the county."
Ambassador for Herefordshire and distinguished cellist, Julian Lloyd Webber, a strong supporter of the programme from the start said, "This is a fantastic opportunity for all those who value music in Herefordshire. I am certain it will be a huge success. I was privileged to be able to open the new music block, so I know how well equipped it is. It is wonderful that Herefordshire has such a facility on its doorstep."
