BASKETBALL WHEELS ITS WAY INTO COLLEGE

2nd August 2010

A wheelchair basketball session was organised for College students through a new link with the Worcester Wolves Basketball Club. The session was run by two coaches supplied by the very successful local club who also supplied the chairs which they have recently purchased. The students all got a chance to perform new skills and techniques whilst in the wheelchairs before moving onto playing games. The chairs are part of a new initiative by the Wolves to promote wheelchair basketball in the area and Wednesday saw them visit both Whitecross High School and Hereford Sixth Form College.

Emma O’Donnell, the Colleges' own basketball coach, joined in with the sessions and said "It was a great experience for all those involved which helped the students understand the difficulties faced by disabled athletes." In all 20 College students and four staff got involved in the event which was also open to students at other schools and institutes in the area. Lorrain Cross, Hereford’s Disability Sports Development Officer, invited two local students along to partake in the session and is keen to include more young people in future sessions.

The College is hoping to replicate the session on a regular basis to tie it in with the plans for a new Basketball Academy. So watch this space!
