College Sporting Successes 2010

11th May 2010

College successes to date this year include Darren Dixon, pictured in action, who has been chosen to represent England in the British Colleges National Hockey Squad. Darren was picked along with two other goalkeepers and has played in games against Ireland & Germany. Darren was also put forward for the BCS ambassador scheme and is the region's non-travelling reserve.

Chris Phillips is another student who was recognised for his contributions to sport when he won the ‘Young Volunteer of the Year’ award at the Herefordshire Sports Annual presentation in February. Chris spends over five hours a week volunteering with football coaching and refereeing and is working towards his gold Step into Sport Certificate.

Other successes this year have gone to the girls' hockey squad who have, after winning a number of tournaments and competitions, been asked to represent the West Midlands at the British College Sports National Championships in April. The girls had to perform penalty flicks to win the final of the Lilleshall tournament and really held their own winning 5-3. As well as the hockey girls we also have a trampolinist, a swimmer and two cross-country runners going to the championships held at Loughborough University. This really is a great opportunity for all performers as well as a fabulous experience. In addition to students performing at this year’s BCS Championships we also have a Hereford Sixth Form College leader representing the region who will be involved in the behind-the-scenes work that goes on at such a large scale event.
