Students Volunteer and Do Their Bit Encouraged by Local V-Involved Team

9th May 2010

Students from the Hereford Sixth Form College have taken a big step and found themselves volunteering placements. The students ranging in age and areas of interest have got involved with an array of organisations and activities. With benefits including an improved CV, a stronger UCAS application, increased confidence, new skills and experience – there has never been a better time to volunteer.

These young people were encouraged and assisted in finding suitable volunteering by the Herefordshire vinvolved team (a project of Herefordshire Voluntary Action), part of the National Youth Volunteering Scheme called v. The scheme, which began in April 2008, aims to encourage a million more young people aged 16-25 to volunteer. Locally the team of John Williams and James Rogers has been very pleased with the success so far. Since the start of the academic year in September 2009 a drop-in service has been run by James from the V team at the College. This has allowed students to come down and talk about volunteering on an informal basis. It is hoped that this will continue for at least another year.

Some of the students pictured have volunteered on the Youth Action Team (part of the V Team) getting involved with local community events, fundraising and running a youth funding scheme called YouthBank. Others have found placements at organisations such as The Royal National College for the Blind and Action for Children.

Anyone interested in volunteering or simply finding out more information and to arrange an informal chat at the volunteer centre can call James on 01432 343932.
