Marches Yoghurt Hits the Capital

16th February 2010

As part of Global Entrepreneurship week, teams of 4-6 students across the nation were set a challenge to create a ‘cool creation’ inspired by their local environment. Marches Yoghurt took advantage of the vast selection of agriculture in Herefordshire and created high-ended, ethically-produced yoghurt. Following our trip to Coventry, Marches Yoghurt hit London, where we represented the West Midlands amongst twelve teams from across the UK.

The competition took place in the King’s Place Arts Centre in the King’s Cross area of London. We faced a harder challenge with new rivals, but with our new and improved presentation we were hopeful. Upon the morning of the competition we were set a miniature challenge, to create an outline for a global campaign using our product. We were excited to see the ideas the ten other teams had created and enjoyed interacting with teams from across the nation.

Following this was the main task. There was a brief speech from Rachel Riley introducing us to the afternoon events. Then we were set to present to an auditorium full of guests. We felt nervous sitting in the audience listening to other teams. But by far the most awe-inspiring aspect of the competition was presenting our product to an array of well known judges including Will King, the founder of King of Shaves. As a result of this came harder and more probing questions for our team to tackle. We presented our product as effectively as we could, however, were unable to achieve the top prize as there were many other innovative ideas amongst us. The team was lucky enough to win the prize for the group that showed the most initiative. We were able to achieve this by coming prepared with our PowerPoint on a memory pen when the technology crashed before we were to present. The prize included a £30 voucher to which we intend to use to purchase a tree which may be planted outside the new Business Studies building.

Overall the experience was unforgettable and enjoyable. We also have hope for the future of Marches Yoghurt with personnel from Enterprise UK displaying interest in aiding us to develop our product. We are currently in discussion over where our future leads and what it would mean for our team and are thankful for the opportunities which have arisen from taking part in this challenge.
