Review of the London Globe Trip

17th December 2009

On the 4th of December, a group of English Literature students went on a trip to London to see The Globe Theatre. We were first given a tour around the famous building – a reconstruction of the original theatre which stood in Shakespearean times. Our guide was great – interesting and engaging – as he told us some of the history behind the building. It really was a beautiful and unique place, with the circular walls, open roof, tiered galleries and wooden columns adding to the charm. Most impressive of all was the stage; highly decorated and complete with trap doors and hidden entrances. Seeing where the Shakespearean plays would have actually been performed really helped to put them in context. Standing in The Globe, it wasn’t hard to imagine a raucous Elizabethan audience gathering to watch a play. The tour was followed by a drama workshop in which we took part in a range of exercises based loosely around the play Othello. As well as deepening our understanding of the play, the exercises were really fun – everyone joined in enthusiastically and had a great time. Followed by an afternoon shopping in London, it was a truly enjoyable day.
