Geography Student's Research Changes Thinking
14th October 2009
Hereford Sixth Form College geography student, Katie Francis, has broken new ground with her geography field research on the landscape of Northern Herefordshire.
Katie conducted a programme of research on the former Proglacial Lake Wigmore, which existed during the Ice Age when the Wye Glacier blocked the River Teme about 18,000 years ago.
Katie’s research has overturned accepted ideas on the origins of the Downton Gorge. This is the overspill channel through which Lake Wigmore drained and diverted the River Teme to Ludlow and through which it still flows today.
Katie’s article on the origins of the Downton Gorge has been accepted by Professor Michael Rosenbaum for publication in an academic journal “The Proceedings of the Shropshire Geological Society (2009)”. A full copy of Katie’s article can be seen online at http://shropshiregeology.org.uk under publications.
