Climate Change Carnival
College Students in Hereford's First Climate Action Carnival
16th June 2009
Current students and College alumni came together, along with Politics tutor Marco Martinelli, to participate in Hereford’s first Climate Change event, held in Hightown at the end of May.
Camilla Blair, Lucia Macnanaman, Anna McGivern and many other students joined former students Lu Mason and Becky Bond to take part in the procession in Hightown, which formed part of the Carnival. It was a highly colourful event, involving jugglers, stilt-walkers and fancy dress.
The procession of course had a serious purpose, and it was followed by a showing of the highly acclaimed film Age of Stupid, which asks the question: “Why didn't we stop climate change when we had the chance?”
Climate Action Carnival’s objective is to draw attention to the Copenhagen Climate Summit being staged in December, which many people suggest has the real potential to be one of the most important and far-reaching meetings in human history.
Hereford’s determination to keep this vital topic in the public eye means a Climate Action Carnival will be staged on the last Saturday of every month, at 12 noon, in the centre of Hereford.
In this way Carnival organisers intend to increase awareness of the need for urgent and on-going action on climate change by providing information, fostering discussion groups and providing access to local community actions as well as national campaigns. The whole initiative forms part of the philosophy of “Thinking Global:Acting Local”.
