Year 10 language students at Kingstone with Rachel Rogers and Lucy Godding

To Sixth Form College and Beyond...

11th June 2009

Ex-student, Lucy Godding, joined staff from Hereford Sixth Form College and recently went back to Kingstone High School to meet her former teachers and to talk to Year 10 Modern Languages students about “making the leap” from school, to Sixth Form College and beyond.

Lucy joined us after Kingstone to do A levels and achieved 100% in German A level (the highest score in the whole country for 2008), as well as A grades in French and Archaeology A levels, A grades in English Literature and Drama & Theatre Studies at AS and A*s in both GCSE Spanish and GCSE Russian.

She spoke to the Year 10 linguists about her experiences of settling into College life and the fun and hard work during her A levels and since.

This year, Lucy has been backpacking around New Zealand, working in an estate agent and catering in various festivals around the country. Now she is looking forward to making the next leap onto St Andrew’s University where she will study French, German and Russian. “Being back in school is a bit weird: I’m sure the place is smaller than I remember it!”

Lucy explained. “One of the best things about languages at A level is the study visits: it’s so good joining a family and learning so much about the language and culture when you’re abroad! The lessons are fun too: I loved playing Monopoly in Russian!” German and Russian teacher Rachel Rogers, who used to teach Lucy, explained the different options open to potential linguists – including the new Latin GCSE - and invited students along to the Year 10 Taster days in July and to Open Evenings next year, so that they can meet the other teachers and find out more about what’s involved.
