Students Air Their Views in BBC Radio Debate

26th May 2009

Hereford Sixth Form College students, who will shortly be first-time voters, took part recently in a lively in-depth political debate on BBC Hereford and Worcester radio in the build up to the forthcoming European elections.

Political correspondent Elisabeth Glinka visited College to find out how students viewed the importance of next month’s elections and what their opinions are on the parties vying for their votes. Elizabeth quizzed them on what the relevance of Europe is to them and which parties would appeal to them and why.

With proportional voting systems in use for European elections, a possible backlash against the major parties due to the current expense claims scandal proved a topical consideration. In turn this generated much discussion about the anticipated relevance of the smaller parties. In hotly-debated discussion students aired their opinions on the potential of the Greens and UKIP, both of which could well win seats in Brussels in the current climate.

The College’s carefully planned enrichment and careers programmes are resulting in an ever-growing involvement in the wider community. They also provide further evidence of the maturity and vision of our students who are taking advantages of opportunities and engaging in academic and vocational activities far beyond the range of pure curriculum-based study. The personal and academic development gained will undoubtedly prove invaluable for them in their careers.

The debate on contemporary political issues at local, national and international level is set to continue next year with several projects in progress. Watch this space!
