Scrapple for the Apple
College Band Enters Parliament
19th May 2009
Hereford Sixth Form College students, Toby Britnell, Francis Clegg, Joe Pugh, Joe Standell, Jordan Alfonso and Michael Prestage, entertained MPs and college Principals at a special event in the House of Commons to mark the launch of the National Sixth Form Colleges' Prospectus and Guidance to Local Authorities on the new arrangements for managing 16-19 provision.
Scrapple for the Apple, a jazz band from the College, was selected to provide lunch-time entertainment. John Freeman, ex Director of Children’s Services in Dudley, and the government's national adviser to Local Authorities on the changes in their role, said “Sixth Form Colleges were described as the jewel in the crown of the English Educational System by the Chief Inspector of Schools and I agree totally. All the evidence shows they are the most successful providers of education for sixth form students and also best value for money. I very much hope more Local Authorities consider establishing Sixth Form Colleges.”
The event was sponsored by Luton MP, Kelvin Hopkins, an ex-professional musician, who is also Chair of the House of Commons' Jazz Committee and Vice-Chairman of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Mr Hopkins said, “I was delighted to hear such a superb jazz group and very much enjoyed talking to them about the music they played.”
The band was warmly congratulated by many others including Paul Keetch and Bill Wiggin, whose support was most welcome, and also Gerald Kauffman MP, ex-Chairman of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee.
Michael Prestage, trumpet player in Scrapple for the Apple said “It was a great privilege to be asked to play at this event and we enjoyed it tremendously”.
