Hereford Sixth Form College has secured its place in the British Colleges National Semi Finals with a dominant win over John Leggott Sixth Form College from Scunthorpe on Wednesday 25th March, 56-21. Following Hereford’s very narrow win over Hartpury in the regional final everyone was expecting a tough battle at this stage of the competition. However, this did not prove to be the case as Hereford strolled to victory. Preparation for the game had gone well with a number of victories in friendly matches. All the first choice players returned and Hereford was able to field a strong starting line-up of May Blackman Howard GK, Anna Mulderrig GD, Emily Pedersen WD, Ella Langford C, Natasha Davies WA, Kate Morgan GA and Helen Hancock GS.
Hereford established an early lead in the first quarter, working at speed and with confidence in all areas of the court. Blackman Howard, Mulderrig and Pedersen defended very well, rushing John Leggot into playing netball they were not comfortable with. At the other end of the court Hancock and Morgan regained their usual top form. Their consistency is amazing to behold and they utilised the turnovers made in centre court, giving Hereford a 17-5 lead.
The second quarter saw Hereford settle, they covered the court well with Langford totally in control of the mid-court making some good turnovers. Davies linked the play up well with some excellent feeds into Hancock and Hereford’s lead increased further. John Leggott had made some changes but this failed to have any impact on Hereford’s game.
Hereford made one change for the third quarter, bringing on Jade Finney at WD. Finney added extra pressure with tight marking and some good tips that were picked up by Mulderigg and Langford. Blackman Howard remained in control of the defensive circle allowing only four goals in, in the third quarter.
Hereford and John Leggott made further changes for the fourth quarter. Morgan and Hancock switched positions, Natalie Booth came on to WD and Finney moved back into GK while Pedersen came back on as WA. These changes forced Hereford to play a different style of game, but they remained calm and secured the win. The final score 56-21.
Our team played a completely different match from the game against Hartpury. The girls demonstrated maturity in adapting their game plan to suit the match and win by such a large margin. Hereford is now through to the final four colleges in the country with the match hopefully taking place on Wednesday 22nd April.
