Sixth Form College to Introduce Latin GCSE

17th April 2009

Hereford Sixth Form College’s very successful lunch-time Latin sessions have proved so popular that the College is to introduce a full GCSE course in September 2009.

Principal, Jonathan Godfrey said, “I am delighted to be able to offer a course which will allow more students to progress to degree courses requiring a knowledge of an ancient language, but which also enhances the understanding and appreciation of a wider range of humanities subjects. Currently no maintained school in the county offers GCSE or AS Latin."

The venture has been well received by universities who have been concerned about Latin and Greek becoming the preserve of the independent sector. Dr Armand D’Angour, Tutor in Classics at Jesus College Oxford said, “I welcome this marvellous initiative based at an outstanding sixth form college”.
