Hereford Sixth Form College has been named as the best school or college in the country for its results in the BTEC National Diploma in Sport in the ‘Good Schools Guide’. The College is the biggest centre for this qualification in the county and many of its ex students go on to the leading universities offering sports related courses. The College also runs three Sports Academies in Rugby, Football and Netball, each achieving great success both locally and nationally.
Last year several teams from the academy system progressed into the later stages of prestigious competitions. Girls football made their mark in the first season of operation by reaching the semi finals of the ESFA Knockout Cup. Girls Hockey backed up the efforts of their counterparts in the soccer squad by reaching the quarter final of the Colleges Cup. The boys rugby academy team also tasted success narrowly losing a quarter final game in the Daily Mail U18 Vase Competition. It was the most successful sporting year for some considerable time and this was reflected by the large number of players from across the teams who gained further recognition in their selected sports. This season has started equally as well with some notable performances from the Netball Academy who are competing in the British Colleges League for the first time in the colleges history. The new P.E. facilities will include artificial surfaces for football, hockey, netball and tennis. Principal, Jonathan Godfrey said “The College BTEC National Diploma was also recently identified as gaining outstanding value added in a national survey reflecting the excellent results achieved with students of all abilities and I am pleased to see P.E. staff gain further recognition for their hard work and skill”. Ed.
Head of P.E., Andy Douthwaite said “I am delighted that the department has been recognised in this way and can only see further improvement when our new all-weather facilities planned for 2009 are in place. These will not only provide fantastic resources for BTEC but also for A level P.E. and for the hundreds of students who participate in recreational sport”
