Geography Alpine Fieldtrip (July 2008)
30th July 2008
All the A2 Geographers visited the Hotel "La Belle Etoile" at the tiny ski resort of Le Bettex 1500 metres up in the French Alps.
During an action packed week students visited the Mer de Glace (second largest glacier in the Alps), and the pretty lakeside resort of Annecy, whilst travelling on cable cars and mountain railways.
The mountain weather was sometimes an attraction itself with a particularly dramatic thunderstorm on one evening. For many students, though, the highlight was a walk along the spectacular "Grand Balcony Trail," a 2.5km high path just below the snowline on the slopes of Mont Blanc, which concluded with a visit to the famous Montenvers ice cave.
High spirits were maintained throughout the week, even after an unscheduled several hour stop at a French motorway service station on the return journey while the coach was repaired!
