College Bids for Eco-Schools Award

15th January 2008

Hereford Sixth Form College is emphasising its increasing and positive involvement in environmental issues by launching a bid for an Eco-Schools Award.

To launch the bid the College has invited Mike Townsend OBE, formerly CEO of the Woodland Trust, to its Folly Lane campus next Thursday (24th January), when Mr Townsend will talk about how Hereford - one of the ‘Transition Towns’ - can move towards a low-carbon, re-localised economy.

Mr. Townsend’s lecture begins at 1.05pm in the PAC.

The College has a well-established tradition of regular, lively debates – often fostered by the Debates Society - so some well-informed, probing questions for Mr Townsend can be expected after his talk.

The College views this as another step along its path towards the Eco-Schools prestigious Green Flag Award which, to date, has been awarded only to Primary and Secondary schools in this region.

As part of the initiative College students have pressed, successfully, for the College café to carry more Fairtrade products, and these are becoming increasingly popular, as students also become more aware of trade and justice issues. There is a move, too, towards recyclable containers, and a pilot scheme to recycle drinks cans has been well supported.

It is anticipated that Mr Townsend’s talk will make students more aware of their role in the wider environment and of the issues facing communities.

Anyone interested in learning more about the College’s bid for an Eco-Schools Award, is invited to contact Jane Godfrey, Head of Environmental Sciences.
