National Finalists Through Chip Fat Idea
7th December 2007
As reported in The Hereford Journal of 5th December, recycled fish and chip fat from local take-aways has given a tasty idea for a team of students from Hereford Sixth Form College.
They have made it to the national finals of the Make Your Mark Challenge, the UK's largest enterprise competition.
The team's idea was 'Fat Fuel', which sources cooking oil from local chip shops and recycles it as a cheaper source of fuel than petrol, saving the consumer money as well as the chip shop owners who would have to otherwise pay for the oil to be taken away.
The Hereford team beat off competition from 1,200 other colleges throughout the UK to reach the national finals, which will take place in London on Monday-Tuesday, December 10-11.
To scoop the prize the teams will need to impress a panel of judges including Levi Roots, the entrepreneur who made his name by winning the investment he needed for his product Reggae Reggae Sauce on the BBC's Dragons' Den, Matt Littler, who plays Max in teen soap Hollyoaks, and Seb Bishop, entrepreneur and star of C4's Millionaire's Mission.
the challenge was Make it pay in a globalocal way - requiring teams to think of ideas which act at a local level and have impact on a global scale.
Harry Rich, chief executive of Make Your Mark said: "The team has made it to the final because they understood what it means to have a local idea which will have global impact, and presented a creative idea with real potential."
Designed specifically to foster teamwork, kick-start imaginations and unleash creativity for developing money-making ideas, the Challenge is run by the national Make Your Mark campaign, which also co-ordinates Enterprise Week.
