Pedicargo and Pedicabs - Former Student Launches Pedal Power Company
13th November 2007
Ruth Brinton, Angie Pretty and Heather Cantrill attended the launch of a new company founded by former student Ben Matthews (1996-98) and Will Vaughan, a former HCAD student (1997-99).
Pedicargo was launched officially at the beginning of October, at Café Green in St. Owens Street, Hereford.
Ben and Will told us, “Pedicargo is an off-shoot of our company Hereford Pedicabs, a cycle rickshaw company which we launched in Hereford in April 2007. The goal of both of the companies is to provide safe transport for people and goods in an environmentally friendly and sustainable fashion. Everything we do as a company has to be done in line with our three core polices - everything has to be FUN, GREEN and HONEST.”
Ben and Will report that between April and the beginning of November, Hereford Pedicabs has helped over 6000 people to get from A to B without emissions and,
uniquely, these people have paid what they think the service is worth, there has been no set charge.
“By Christmas we imagine we will have exceeded 8000 customers,” Ben and Will explained.
Pedicargo – run in much the same way as Pedicabs – already has transported over 3500 documents and items in its first eight weeks of business, some up to the weight of 250kgs.
The company is also developing a new dimension at the same time. “We have now embarked on recycling schemes for local business and many types of regular freight, from planning files to hospital samples."
Encouraged by their success to date, the business partners say “Every week we get busier and every one of those journeys is of benefit to the environment. We provide affordable same day, green, delivery. We’re based in the centre of the city and have access to cycle paths within 50 metres of our front door.”
