GCSE Health and Social Care Bridges Academia and Community
13th November 2007
This new dynamic GCSE course is already building up strong links with community services in its first year.
The GCSE course is a new style of GCSE that takes a more vocational line of study focusing on the services available in Herefordshire. As a result, the course has been pro-active in inviting guest speakers and experts from all over the County to share their expertise and knowledge with the students. In turn this is increasing the College’s profile in the local community and forming valuable relationships with long-established Herefordshire health and charity organisations.
The response from the local community has been immense, with experts in many of the care service in Herefordshire very excited about coming to visit, keen to build up relationships with Hereford Sixth Form College.
The College’s new GCSE Health and Social Care course began this term. It turned out to be one of the most popular GCSE courses, attracting much student interest, and adding to the newly-established Health and Social Care department’s already very successful A level programme.
At enrolment the Health and Social Care tutors were delighted by the popularity of the subject and warmed by the enthusiasm and excitement of the prospective students.
A recent visitor to the department was Nicky Willett who broke from a very busy schedule at the Herefordshire Primary Care Trust. She came to College to explain to students the role of the PCT in providing NHS care in our County. She later commented on the enthusiasm of the students she met here at College.
More recently a team from the Herefordshire Council of Independent Living visited us to talk about the unique and innovative services provided for clients with physical and learning disabilities. They were keen to promote in College a broad awareness of their client group, especially to those who have the potential to be the next generation of health and social care workers in Hereford.
Abi, a student on the course, said, “ It is an enjoyable, interesting course where I have learnt a lot of different things that I knew nothing about before. The guest speakers have been enjoyable, as well as offering me a better idea of what I could be doing in the future.”
