Former Student's Visit Sharing Experience of Life at University and in Industry

13th November 2007

Former Hereford Sixth Form College student, John McHugh, paid a return visit to College recently after John Pratt had invited John to talk to Year 11 GCSE Science at St Mary’s, John McHugh's old school.

Angie Leslie, Head of Science at St. Mary’s, was thrilled to welcome John back – greeting him with a big hug!

The theme of his talk at St. Mary’s was "Making the Leap!" from school to Sixth Form College, and then on to University. John also readily answered questions about his experiences ranging from how he settled into Sixth Form after leaving school, to what life at University is like, and the demands of a year in industry managing a very large budget.

John, who was at College here from 2002 to 2004, gained five A Levels in Chemistry, Computing, Maths, General Studies and Physics. He has now completed a Master’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering at Bath University.

As part of that degree, he undertook (and has just finished) a Year in Industry. During this year he worked for Centrica, gaining a whole range of management skills.

Last summer saw him undertaking voluntary work in Africa, teaching English to school children in classes of 70!

On his visit to College he was very impressed by The Pavilion – and felt envious that it was not here during his time in College!
