Stuff for Students - A Resounding Success
26th September 2007
Stuff for Students was put together by the three Folly Lane colleges, Hereford College of Arts, Herefordshire College of Technology and Hereford Sixth Form College. The focus of the event was to promote local services, clubs, societies, products, etc. to students who are studying at one of the three colleges.
The event was a resounding success with a record number of exhibitors attending this year and around 1500 students working their way through the maze of displays, freebies and activities put on by political parties, banks, mobile phone companies, driving instructors, job agencies, retail trade, health organisations, volunteer services, charities, the Territorial Army and leisure & fitness organisations.

Overall, the event was received extremely positively by exhibitors, students and staff from each of the Folly Lane colleges.
One of the exhibitors was Dr. John Dinnen, Fairtrade Co-ordinator for Herefordshire. He reflected on Stuff for Students: “The Fairtrade stall at Stuff for Students held at Hereford Sixth Form College went very well. One of the big attractions was the free sample of Divine Dark Chocolate! There were many students who already knew about Fairtrade and supported it. One student said he knew that the there were Fairtrade items available at the Bridge Café but he would like lunch time events to raise the profile of Fairtrade higher. Another student queried whether Fairtrade really was an unfair subsidy disadvantaging other producers. I explained that in an ideal world, with fair rules of international trade, special status for fairtrade items might not be necessary. Meanwhile, however, Fairtrade ensured fair working conditions, no child labour and a premium to help with provision of education and health services.”
Another visitor to the event was a member of the teaching staff from Hereford Sixth Form College, Marco Martinelli, who also runs the College's Debating Society. Marco reported, "Thanks to the Stuff for Students event, I have secured a speaker from Concern Universal for our Debating Society.".
Other exhibitors reported a similar lively and interested response from students and were already planning to book their space for next year – all of which ensures that Stuff for Students is likely to become an annual fixture in the College calendar.
