Before the Minnows Scattered

6th March 2007

Underneath black water On a summer afternoon I watched the minnows lunging Through the peaceful streamly currents And I marvelled at how simple and how bright Their lives must be.

When I brought my face up from the water I saw you sitting on the bank But you would not join the splashing And the minnows scattered As I smacked the water In defiance of your killjoy attitude.

I lie, of course. I did not think you killjoy; Contrary, I thought it fine And mature that you would not join the play.

But now that I am older than we were then I wonder Perhaps you were foolish after all Not to join in one of the last days we had left For wasting a precious summer day When our childhoods were trailing behind us And before us was the ocean And you would not splash in the mellow stream Too eager to stay sitting And sail away.
