Student Gold Medallist

29th January 2007

Simon Williams, a second-year student at Hereford Sixth Form College, has been awarded a Gold Medal in the British Physics Olympiad.

The Olympiad, run under the aegis of the Institute of Physics, takes the form of a special exam which the students sit voluntarily. Simon sat the British Physics Olympiad test in November and, by coming in the top 50 in the country, Simon won his Gold Medal.

Head of Physics at the Sixth Form College, Andrew Sutton said, "We are delighted at Simon's success. The Olympiad is a real challenge. The top physics students in the country compete and this is a marvellous result for Simon, reflecting his interest in the subject and his enthusiasm for science."

Simon's success gives him the opportunity to tackle another hurdle where further success could lead to a chance of an expenses-paid trip to compete in the 2007 International Physics Olympiad in Iran in mid-summer.

Simon, a former pupil of Weobley High School said, 'I'm very pleased indeed with this award and am now looking forward to the challenge of the next stage of the competition'.

In addition to Simon's splendid success, Hereford Sixth Form College also provided one Silver Medallist in the Olympiad, David Allman, and three Bronze Medallists, Eliza Selley, Jason Lloyd and Adsvait Rao.

Andrew Sutton added, "The fact that the College has produced five medallists in this year's Olympiad gives an encouraging indication of the strength of physics – and sciences in general - in College, and also provides a good indication of our students' willingness to take on new challenges."
